Area information

The town of Stamford is situated around 160 km (100 miles) north of London, just off the A1, which was the old Great North Road leading to York and Edinburgh. Enjoying conservation status, this once prominent wool town has retained much of its traditional charm. Many of the buildings are constructed from old Lincolnshire limestone, hence the town's distinguished appearance and popularity with tourists and movie producers - Stamford has appeared in Middlemarch, Pride and Prejudice and The Da Vinci Code.

Nearby attractions include:

Burghley House (3.5 km / 2.2 miles) - playing host to the famous Burghley Horse Trials, this 16th century house boasts extensive grounds and several substantial art collections of notable significance.

Nene Valley Railway (12 km / 7.4 miles) - this preserved steam railway runs through a picturesque cross-country route.

Barnsdale Gardens (14 km / 8.7 miles) - just off the nearby A606, these 37 gardens link borders into one large 8 acre site, famous as the home of the late Geoff Hamilton and his Gardeners' World BBC TV series.

Travel information

By Car (from the A1):
- From the North or South, leave the A1 at the Carpenter Lodge roundabout and then follow signs for Stamford Town on the B1081.
- At the crossroads, go straight on and over the River Welland bridge.
- Follow the road up the hill; turn left and then right (towards the town centre).
- The All Saints Church will be in front of you. Drive around the back of the church on the cobbled road
