Aberdeen

Aberdeen is Scotland’s third largest city with a population of over 215,000. It is commonly referred to as the ‘Granite’, ‘Rainbow’ or ‘Silver’ City due to the grey or occasionally sparkling stone used in older buildings in the city.

It is a relatively small city as it is significantly smaller than Glasgow or Edinburgh. Aberdeen has a harbour and picturesque beach.  It is distinctively different from other Scottish cities as it has some of the oldest university buildings in Europe. After the discovery of oil in the North Sea, the city has expanded greatly and several new suburbs were formed.  Aberdeen has seen continued growth ever since and a range of new developments are planned for the near future.

English is spoken but in many parts of Scotland there are local accents and dialects which can be confusing. If you ask a local politely to repeat what they are saying they should regulate their dialect to adopt a more standard English to converse with you.

There are many places to go and see a show or concert and there are four main venues in Aberdeen which each have a distinct atmosphere in each for any kind of performance. Aberdeen has a number of covered central shopping centres as well as a mile long shopping street which has many standard Scottish high street shops as well as being lined by many beautiful buildings.

Aberdeen has a wide variety of restaurants which cater for every taste. It also has its fair share of bars and nightclubs and due to the large student population, there are always deals to be found.
