It has been said that the Spanish capital cannot be compared to cities like Paris and Rome, but Madrid has had a major revamp in the last couple of years and is fast becoming one of the new hot spots in Europe. The museums have got bigger and better, the centre is smartening up with new boutiques, cafés and restaurants and the nightlife is putting itself on the European map as one of the best. We have hundreds of luxury and cheap hotels in Madrid, perfect for a culture-rich long weekend where you can join the Madrid population of living ‘the good life’. Although the capital doesn’t have an Eiffel Tower or a Colosseum, it makes up for this with its unique style and elaborate architecture. The baroque and romantic architectural styles are living testimonies to Madrid’s grandeur. This is shown in a number of palaces and mansions including the stunning Royal Palace, home to the Royal Family and The Palacio de las Cortes de Espana, the city’s Parliament buildings. There are also many churches and cathedrals elegantly displaying gothic and baroque designs.
Puerta del Sol is the most commercial area in Madrid’s old town and the Plaza Mayor is the central square from which you can stroll around and take in the sights. Few cities in Europe can boast such a huge park but the Parque del Buen Retiro enjoys around 118 hectares featuring a spacious boating lake and three stunning art galleries. Madrid is renowned for its museums, boasting that of The Prado, one of the most important art museums in Europe as well as The Reina Sofia and The Thyssen-Bornemisza, both comprising world class collections. Shopaholics will enjoy spending time between the Gran Via's department stores, Salamanca's fashionable streets and the quirky stores off the pretty Plaza Mayor. Madrid becomes particularly exuberant as soon as the sun sets and the locals and tourists like to party like there’s no tomorrow! The city’s nightlife leaves a huge impact on first-time visitors with a great selection of trendy bars, stylish wine bars, live music venues and vibrant nightclubs. As well as all this, Madrid is proud to offer excellent food, whether you choose to sit down in a posh dining room for a three course meal or perch on a stool in a bustling tapas bar.
